What it is

What is Reformer Pilates and how does it work?

Reformer Pilates is a low-impact strength and mobility method performed on a sliding carriage with adjustable spring resistance, foot bar, straps and pulleys. Each exercise targets deep core, posture and joint stability while keeping load off the spine — making it useful for athletes, beginners and clients rebuilding after injury alike.

Unlike mat Pilates, the Reformer adds resistance and assistance in equal measure. Springs can lighten a movement to teach the pattern, then load it to build strength. That dual quality is why we use it across the Olympia population — from competitive athletes restoring rotational control to weekend warriors fixing chronic hip and shoulder issues.

What Reformer Pilates options does Olympia offer?

Olympia runs Reformer Pilates in two formats: scheduled group classes and private or semi-private sessions. Choose group classes for community-paced training on a fixed weekly schedule, or private bookings for one-on-one programming around injury, posture or sport-specific goals.

Reformer Pilates Classes

Coach-led group sessions on a fixed weekly schedule. A balanced full-body programme of strength, mobility and core work — every class scales for first-timers and experienced practitioners on the same floor.

Private & Semi-Private Sessions

One-on-one or two-client bookings with a dedicated Reformer coach. Programming is built around your body — postural assessment, mobility restrictions, sport demands or post-injury rebuild.

Reformer for Athletes

Targeted Reformer work layered into HYROX, high-performance or strength blocks. Used for hip and shoulder mobility, rotational control and unilateral stability that translates directly to sport.

Reformer for Rehab & Returns

Low-load, spring-supported movement for clients returning from surgery, injury or long layoffs. The Reformer scales effort precisely so progress is measured in millimetres before it is measured in kilos.

Who is Reformer Pilates for?

Reformer Pilates is for every BODY — competitive athletes, weekend warriors, first-timers and clients rebuilding after injury. Olympia coaches train clients from youth all the way to ninety years old, so programming scales to age, history and goal rather than fitting clients into a single template.

  • Adults wanting low-impact strength, posture and mobility training year-round
  • Athletes layering Reformer work onto HYROX, strength or sport-specific blocks
  • Runners and lifters fixing chronic hip, knee, lower-back or shoulder issues
  • Pre- and post-natal clients seeking spring-supported core and pelvic-floor work
  • Clients rebuilding after injury or surgery, working with a coach on a deload plan
  • Weekend warriors who want measurable mobility gains alongside their main training

How does a Reformer session run at Olympia?

Every new client starts with a short postural and movement screen before the first Reformer session. The coach uses that screen to set spring loads, exercise selection and pacing — so the same machine teaches a beginner the basic carriage glide and challenges an athlete with single-leg eccentrics in the same week.

  1. 1. Movement Screen

Posture, breathing, hip and shoulder mobility, and any injury history. We learn what your body actually does before loading the carriage.

  2. 2. Foundation Phase

Carriage glide, footwork, pelvic position and breath-to-movement timing. Spring loads are set to teach the pattern cleanly before adding intensity.

  3. 3. Strength & Mobility Phase

Layered programming — leg work, core, upper-body pulls, rotational control and unilateral stability. Loads progress as patterns hold up under fatigue.

  4. 4. Carry-Over Phase

Reformer drills that translate to your sport, lift or daily life — runners get hip control, lifters get bracing, post-rehab clients get confidence under load.

Reformer Pilates FAQ

Common questions before booking a Reformer Pilates class or private session at Olympia Performance in West Island Montreal.

Do I need Reformer Pilates experience to start?

No experience required. New clients start with a short movement screen so the coach can set spring loads and exercise selection appropriately. First-timers train alongside experienced practitioners — every Reformer session scales spring resistance, range and tempo so each client works at the right intensity for their body.

What is the difference between classes and private Reformer sessions?

Reformer classes follow a fixed weekly schedule and a coach-led group programme — efficient and community-paced. Private and semi-private sessions are one-on-one or two-client bookings where the coach designs each session around your posture, mobility, sport demands or rehab goals. Both formats use the same equipment and coaches.

Can Reformer Pilates help with back pain or injury recovery?

Yes. The Reformer's spring resistance lets coaches load or unload an exercise precisely, which is why it is widely used for back, hip, knee and shoulder rehab. Clients returning from injury work with a coach who scales every movement to the current pain-free range — measurable progress without re-aggravating the issue.

How often should I do Reformer Pilates?

Most clients see strong results training Reformer two or three times a week. Athletes layering Reformer onto strength or HYROX blocks often book one or two sessions weekly for mobility and rotational control. Frequency is set during the movement screen, alongside the rest of your weekly training plan.
